About UW Credit Union
UW Credit Union is a federally insured, member-owned, not-for-profit financial institution committed to the financial well-being of our members. We pride ourselves on being a financial institution that makes a positive difference with our members and within our communities.

For nearly a century, we’ve been guided by a simple but powerful mission — your best interest always comes first. Our members know they can count on us to do the right thing—each and every day.

We offer all the services of most major banks, plus more.
About Us

Our History of Doing Good

We were founded in 1931 on the University of Wisconsin campus by people who believed that a financial institution owned by its members would act in the best interests of consumers. Our continued growth, financial strength and market-leading customer satisfaction scores have proven our founding members right.  Read about our history & founders.

People Over Profits

Our goal is to help our members access the financial products and services they need to improve their lives. We take account deposits from members who are in a position to save and loan money to other members needing affordable credit. With no stockholders, we can use potential profits to maintain fair interest rates and keep account fees low. Learn about our corporate governance.

Our Commitment to the Community

Our leadership in educational lending, affordable home financing options and financial literacy helps build strong Wisconsin communities. We are the first source of credit for many young adults and work to ensure their long-term success through our responsible lending practices. We also give generously to charitable causes in our community and college scholarships (we’ve invested more than $1.5 million in need-based scholarships alone), and we’ve been recognized nationally for our commitment to environmental sustainability.

Convenient Locations

With 30 full-service branches (& growing) in Wisconsin, we provide on-site financial services in the campus communities of Madison, Milwaukee, Whitewater, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Stevens Point and La Crosse. We operate more than 100 surcharge-free ATMs in Wisconsin and belong to the Alliance One ATM network with thousands of surcharge-free ATMs throughout the country. Through Web Branch and our mobile app, we serve members all over the world, 24 hours a day. Find a branch or ATM near you.

Our Culture

Sure, we offer competitive wages, excellent benefits, growth opportunities and the usual “must haves” prospective employees are looking for. But we also know that workplace culture plays a huge part in employees’ happiness. As our low turnover rate attests, our approximately 800 employees genuinely want to be here. Here’s why:

Work-Life Balance

We understand the importance of family and flexibility, prioritizing schedules that help you keep a healthy balance.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

We value diversity and inclusion and foster a culture where everyone can thrive. This includes offering Employee Resource Groups for employee networking and support.

Giving in Action

We give back to the communities we serve, including offering employees paid time for volunteering, so you can support causes you believe in.

Environmental Sustainability

We’re committed to greener living, from purchasing 100% renewable energy to reducing our water use and paper consumption.

Continuous Improvement

We listen to employees and turn feedback into action plans so we can make UW Credit Union an even better place to work.

Foundation Wage

We believe that all our employees deserve to earn a sustainable income, and that’s why we increased our minimum wage to $17 an hour – more than double Wisconsin’s minimum wage of $7.25.

Careers

We could tell you all about our exceptionally low employee turnover or our many awards (including Madison Magazine’s Best Places to Work, the Wisconsin State Journal Top Workplace and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Top Workplaces). Or we could just let our employees tell you why they love it here.

We believe UW Credit Union is a special place: a place where people are prized over profits, where the community turns for unbiased financial advice, where we work together to deliver the best value and service to our members and each other.

Inclusion

We strive to cultivate an inclusive workplace that is home to a diverse workforce where employees at all levels model knowledge of, belief in and a commitment to cultural competence. Employees feel valued and respected for their distinctive skills, experiences, perspectives and individual differences creating an environment where everyone is able to fully participate in the organization and team success. -UWCU Strategic Plan

Our Cultural Competency Steering Committee serves as an advisory body to manage Cultural Competency matters while providing and directing resources to further promote education for employees. They encourage and solicit feedback from all employees with regard to cultural competency related ideas, concerns and solutions.

With the guidance of our Steering Committee, here is some progress we have made in the past couple of years:

117 UWCU leaders and professional staff employees have gone through a three-day diversity & inclusion training based on the framework written in Deep Diversity by Shakil Choudhury. 30 of these employees were further trained to become Cultural Competency Champions; these Champions have been responsible for facilitating discussions around key concepts gathered in their trainings to over 450 employees through structured team teaches.

The creation of our Employee Community Groups (ECGs)! ECGs serve as an internal community providing connections with other UWCU employees of common interests and affiliations. ECGs serve as an organizational resource to advance our diverse and inclusive practices in our member service and community partnerships. There are four ECGs at UWCU, they include:

  • Black Excellence
  • Helping Young Professionals Engage (HYPE)
  • Green Team
  • Sexual and Gender Alliance (SAGA)
  • Women’s Leadership Network (WLN)
  • Raices Latinx
